Three Letters and a Dream

I am incredibly honored and excited to announce that on May 2nd I will be joining NPR as Senior Interactive Designer.

About two months ago I updated my LinkedIn profile w/my most current information. Two weeks later I was contacted by an HR/Project Manager explaining there was a role she thought I would be a great fit for and would I be interested. Having grown up listening to NPR this was a dream job.

7+ hours of interviews and a 3 hour design challenge later, I am on Cloud 9.

As part of the Digital Media team, I will be working alongside some of the smartest and talented individuals I have ever met. I will also have the distinct pleasure of working on projects that will include new mobile and web applications, as well as some revolutionary things I look forward to writing more about later.

Until then, I am going to continue smiling from ear-to-ear. Thanks for reading.

Make design like you make love; passionately, attentively, and hopefully not by yourself with only a computer.

Benjamin Dauer is a musician, composer and designer based in Washington, D.C. With many ongoing projects and finished works, some highlights of Benjamin’s include a recent release named Circular Drift with Scottish artist Dominic Dixon under the pair’s Offsets project and a debut solo work named Burning of Wine - both of which are available from the Distance Recordings netlabel. Most recently, Benjamin released Dreams, an EP created with poet Michelle Seaman as The Dwindlers on Feedback Loop.

Hi Benjamin, with your solo release, the Offsets collaboration and an EP from The Dwindlers, you’ve certainly made 2010 a busy year for releases. Is it typical for you to be this productive?

Hi Adam, thanks for inviting me to speak with you. I do try to stay productive with my compositions, but I don’t necessarily release this much music in the form of EPs/LPs - the type of output has varied over the years. For example, while I lived in Chicago I was performing 2 or 3 nights a week with various bands ranging from hip hop to folk to jazz to funk/rock but only releasing an album every year. After moving to North Carolina I began focusing on composing scores for modern dance companies, performing as part of an improvisational modern dance collective, and later performing w/a trio called Last Night in Glasgow. During that time, a period of almost 4 years, I did not release any albums. I did, however, self-release a great deal of those scores earlier this year - paired up with some incredible remixes by friends from all over the world. Total, there is nearly 2 hours worth of free music you can grab them from my personal website under the Remixes section. Overall, I would say this year has been particularly special.

My latest design work for the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University has gone live.

The Record: Contemporary ART and VINYL

The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University presents a groundbreaking exhibition that explores the culture of vinyl records through 50 years of contemporary art.

The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl features work by 41 artists from around the world, from the 1960s to the present, who use vinyl records as subject or medium. The exhibition includes sound work, sculpture, installation, drawing, painting, photography, video and performance.

The Record includes rising stars in the contemporary art world (William Cordova, Robin Rhode, Dario Robleto), outsider artists (Mingering Mike), well-established artists (Jasper Johns, Ed Ruscha, Carrie Mae Weems) and artists whose work will be shown in a U.S. museum for the first time (Kevin Ei-ichi deForest, Jeroen Diepenmaat, Taiyo Kimura, Lyota Yagi).

Please check it out if you have a minute and thanks for looking!
